Frequently Asked Questions

  • A board-certified veterinary surgeon is a veterinarian who has completed advanced specialty training (a surgical residency) and passed comprehensive board examinations through the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS). Board certification reflects a high standard of surgical expertise and ongoing commitment to specialty-level care.

  • ROVRS focuses on veterinary surgery for dogs and cats, including orthopedic procedures and other surgical care depending on your pet’s needs. If you’re not sure which service fits, we can help you choose the right next step during a consult.

  • Yes. We work with your family vet. Once your family vet makes the intitial clinical assessment, they fill out a referral form on our website. Once we receive the form, and documentation we will review your case, talk with your family vet and schedule a consultation to meet you and your pet to talk about treatments and options.

  • We’ll review your pet’s history, examine them, and go over any imaging or test results you already have. Then we’ll explain the diagnosis (in plain language), outline treatment options, and provide a clear plan for next steps, recovery, and estimated costs.

  • We aim to offer timely consults and efficient scheduling whenever possible. Availability depends on case urgency and current surgical bookings, but we’ll let you know the soonest options when you contact us.

  • Comfort is a priority at ROVRS. We use individualized pain-management plans based on your pet, and the procedure. We typically prefer to keep your pet overnight to be watched by a medical team and Doctor to watch over your pets recovery. Surgery can be stressful enough, and our expert team is prepared to supervise their initial recovery in a controlled environment.
Upon discharge your pet will have a solid foundation on their road to recovery.

  • Yes—hind-limb limping is a common reason pets are referred for orthopedic assessment. We can evaluate your dog, discuss whether a cruciate ligament (CCL) injury is likely, and review treatment options and recovery expectations.

  • ROVRS is located in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, operating within Metro Animal Emergency at 201 Brownlow Ave #32. We’re a separate, independently owned clinic, and we serve Halifax and communities across HRM.

  • Absolutely. If your pet is referred (or if you’d like us to loop your vet in), we’ll share updates and a clear plan so your primary care team stays informed before and after surgery.
